How to check and improve your website speed Print

Website speed essentials

Your home page should help visitors get started. A useful speed check begins with one page and one improvement, rather than changing everything at once.

Choose a page that matters

Pick a page customers use, such as your home page, service page or shop. Write down its address and the date of your test. Use the same page for your next comparison.

1. Start with a baseline

Open Google PageSpeed Insights and test your home page or a key service page. Review the mobile results as well as desktop. Save the report so you can compare later. A test score is a diagnostic signal, not a guarantee of every visitor’s experience.

2. Look at your images first

Check whether large photos are being displayed in much smaller spaces. Resize and compress a copy before uploading, and consider modern image formats if your site supports them. Keep the original files so you can adjust quality if needed.

3. Make one change, then test

If you use WordPress, review unnecessary plugins and use a compatible caching setup; avoid stacking multiple caching plugins without guidance. Take a backup before changing site settings. Retest the same page and check navigation, contact forms, and checkout if applicable.

A useful result is a working, easier-to-use page

Prioritize the issues affecting your visitors. Compare results after each change, and remember that live-user data may be unavailable for newer or lower-traffic pages. You do not need to chase a perfect score to make progress.

After a change

Check the page on your phone and desktop. Submit a test contact form and check checkout if your site has one. If anything breaks, revert the change or ask your developer for help. Share the page address and PageSpeed report with support when asking where to start.
